Marina Militare on a mottled dial
On the Panerai Submersible PAM979 the dial is a mottled dark grey with a camouflage-like pattern, and MARINA MILITARE is printed in two lines above the 6. PANERAI and SUBMERSIBLE sit under the 12. The lume is plain white on the round plots, the batons and the skeleton hour and minute hands, which keeps the dial monochrome. Small seconds run at 9, and the date at 3 shows white figures in a dark window.
Carbotech case and Survival Instruments back
Case and bezel are black Carbotech, and the profile photos show the striped grain of the composite along the flank and the knurled edge of the bezel. The bezel has 15, 30 and 45 numerals and dark pips. The solid back is engraved Survival Instruments around a helmeted frogman. The strap is black rubber with a raised logo and a row of holes, closed by a matte black pin buckle. At 47mm, the case suits wrists over 19 cm by our size guide.
More 47mm Carbotech choices
If you want colour on the dial, the two Submersibles below add it. In the same 47mm Carbotech case, the PAM616 Luminor Submersible Carbotech adds beige numerals and blue accents, and the woven-dial PAM1039 brings a GMT hand. The PAM616 has a bezel with orange marks for the first 15 minutes, and the PAM1039 has a woven grey dial with orange hands. Read how Carbotech looks in our Panerai materials guide or browse the Submersible series page.
What does Marina Militare mean?

Is the PAM979 dial grey or black?
Mottled dark grey with a camouflage-like texture; at arm’s length it reads near black.
